Jericho bears great witness to the archaeology, history and human habitation in the Near East. Named ‘the world’s oldest continuously inhabited city’, founded over ten thousand years ago and consistently populated since then, Jericho attests to civilizations from the Jewish, Byzantine and Muslim eras.

Ancient Anthropology

Jericho ‘Tell’, which means ‘settlement mound’, contains over twenty levels of civilization, including remnants from the Bronze, Iron and Neolithic eras. Excavations also revealed a Jewish temple and a Byzantine church, with artifacts on view at a museum beside the architectural ruins.

Religious Relics

View early Islamic architecture at Hisham’s palace, built by this eight-century Islamic ruler. A large bath house with a mosaic floor exists beside the palace. Christian communities lived in Wadi Qelt, a lush valley amid the barren Jericho hills, and the Greek Orthodox Monastery of Saint George resides in this area.

Biblical References

VIP Israel tours to Jericho include the Inn of the Good Samaritan, on the road between Jericho and Jerusalem, the New Testament spot where a passing Samaritan hosted a robbed traveler. The Mount of Temptation, where Satan tried to tempt Jesus, is another must-see spot for Christian visitors. The Biblical conquest of Jericho by the Israelites, and the time that prophet Elijah and his disciple Elijah lived here, can be experienced at Elisha’s spring.
